.hack//Legend of the Twilight

This offering from the hack franchise is more easier to get into compared to its past anime adaptations. There is greater focus on the elements of an MMORPG that .hack//SIGN had minimum focus on as Rena and Shugo form parties to complete player quests and raise their experience levels in the game. In addition, the content to this series is lighter and easier to take in with more focus on comedy and less mysteries for viewers to take in. You will even have the return of some characters from past hack series such as Ginkan (Silver Knight), Aura, and Balmung.

However, much of what made .hack//SIGN appealing to those who could handle its slow pace is lost in this offering. Besides the mysteries surrounding character motivations and plot, the drama that came from character interactions is downplayed for Twilight Bracelet. The character designs look 'chibi'-fied as some characters look more younger than they looked in the World. It took me a while to get used to seeing Shugo and Rena as chibi versions of Kite and Black Rose (both siblings being teens in the real world while they look like kids in the World). Another issue I had was the music selections for Twilight Bracelet. Sign wowed me with its techno-style and dramatic soundtrack. The music for this new version is more mellow and slow, thus lacking the fast intensity that got me giddy over previous offerings of hack.

For those who wanted faster plot development and greater focus on MMORPG elements from hack, this new offering should be alright for you. But, this comes at a cost to those who enjoyed the mysteries and character interactions that came from .hack//SIGN.
