The hardest anime titles to review are those which have neither blatant flaws nor outstanding virtues. If you are like me, and consider fanservice to be neither a plus nor a minus, that's pretty much the category that Dirty Pair Flash 3 falls into. Butch-girl Kei trying to handle a baby, the beach volleyball training regimen, the magic girl wannabe assasin, all were fairly amusing, but definitely not as good as the last mission (I read that a new director took over for this one). Seeing as I wouldn't be willing to fit shows of this caliber into my rent-DVDs-by-mail wish list, and I only paid 99 cents each for two VHS tapes, I guess "Watch" is the most appropriate rating I can assign here. I too was surprised to see Poporo and his white skinned daughter. Either he has a snow-white skinned wife with dominant genes, or, more likely, I suspect skin color is being assigned as ludicrously as hair color as a tool to make characters more identifiable (notice Yuri's purple hair?). When I first saw him, I thought the muscle-man character Umibozou of City Hunter was black, but it soon became clear he was quite Japanese. Last updated Saturday, January 01 2005. I think they only did this one for fanservice. There's no story arc, just five stand alone episodes which mostly have Yuri and Kei in various fanservice moments. So if you've dreamed of seeing the two nude and have a DVD player, you are in luck. Otherwise, the numerous skimpy clothing scenes will have to suffice. The idividual stories while not totally boring are pointless. They serve as tools for the fanservice. While the final episode doesn't have the what most people know as fanservice, it does have the other type of fanservice -- plenty of explosions, a large "cool" ship, a cool "mecha", etc. Selling sex was all this OAV seemed to be about. Thanks to this series, my impression of Yuri is that she is a girl who would have sex with 50 men at once providing they were extremely rich. This seems like an ideal date for her. Man, have I ever become sick of her constant whining about dates! But beyond the sexual connotations with Yuri and Kei, in the final episode, the way the scene between Poporo (the boss) and his grade school daughter was animated smacked highly of lolicon sex. If you didn't know what was being said, you could get suggestions that maybe this little girl was possibly attempting to seduce this man. Plus, why was Poporo's daughter white? He's a black man for crying out loud. I don't know what was going on there, but while the script was non-suggestive, for some reason the visual aspects were to me. There was one neat thing though. For a couple of brief scenes, Yuri wears the old gold-yellow costume worn by the Yuri of the Original Dirty Pair. That was the one shining moment for me. Bottom line: unless you are desperate for fanservice, skip this one and watch something better.Last updated Monday, December 27 2004. Created Sunday, November 02 2003. | ||||||||
