I came across Tokyo Godfathers on TV a few years ago during one of my summer breaks from college. Being my second work that I've seen from Satoshi Kon, this movie impressed me just as much as Perfect Blue where it continued to put focus on the realistic situations of everyday life.

Tokyo Godfathers is both a journey for the search for Kiyoko's parents and a look into the lives of each of these homeless people. All three come from their own distinct and unique backgrounds where each faced their own personal hardships that led them to be stuck on the streets. All three get an equal amount of focus and depth into their situations and feelings so you get a good sense of just who these people really are. Looking into the hardships of the homeless is an aspect of Japanese society never looked into in any past anime titles I've seen and Tokyo Godfathers does a decent job at looking into such a tough position for Gin, Hana, and Miyuki.

The journey to find Kiyoko's family is another aspect to this series handled well. Gin, Hana, and Miyuki come across different clues to locate Kiyoko's parents. Through this journey, the four form a surrogate family of sorts where each one plays a role unique to their personality, a situation that makes 'mother' Hana quite giddy. The journey has its humorous moments where the three argue with each other at some points due to their differences. But, these are human characters who come to get used to each other as the journey presses forward. Such humorous situations even take place with some stages of their journey, which include a confrontation with some in Japan's criminal underworld.

The artwork to the movie has plenty of polish featuring clean lines and a great amount of detail. Animation was smooth and character designs were of the usual approach for Satoshi Kon: realistic detail to character facial designs and bodily proportions. The exaggerated look of some character designs even add to the hilarity of the movie, especially with Hana.

If you're a big Satoshi Kon fan like myself, then you'll enjoy Tokyo Godfathers. It maintains Kon's unique animation direction focused on realistic situations and character features.
